🛡️ Master Guide: How to wash and care for your retro football shirts without ruining them
Buying one of our retro football jerseys is an investment in nostalgia and style. Whether it's a gem from the 90s jerseys or one of our custom jerseys with your name on it, the goal is for it to look like new for years to come.
Old polyester, felt patches, and vinyl numbers are delicate. If you want your FC VINTAGE collection to survive washing, follow these golden rules.
1. 🧼 Washing: The sacred ritual
Forget about throwing your jersey into the laundry pile without thinking. Classic jerseys require special care:
👕 Always inside out: Before any step, turn the jersey inside out. This prevents patches and crests from rubbing directly against the washing machine drum or other garments. ❄️ Cold water (Maximum 20°C - 30°C): Hot water is the number one enemy. Heat weakens the glue on the numbers and shrinks knitted collar fabrics. 🧼 Hand wash (Ideal): If you have 5 minutes, wash it in the sink with a neutral soap. This is the only way to ensure that the patches do not suffer mechanical stress. 🚫 Be careful with fabric softener: While it may seem like a good idea, fabric softener contains chemicals that can degrade vinyl prints in the long run. Use only a mild detergent.
2. 📍 Patches and Numbers: Danger zone
League patches or personalized numbers are the most visual part of the garment, but also the most fragile.
🙅♂️ Do not wring the garment: When wringing it out, do not twist it like a dishcloth. Press gently to remove excess water. If you twist it, you could break the vinyl of the number. 🎒 Be careful with rubbing: Avoid wearing backpacks with very rough straps if you're going to walk a lot; constant rubbing can generate "pilling" (pilling) on the retro fabric.
3. ⚠️ The great taboo: Ironing
NEVER, under any circumstances, iron directly over a number, a patch, or a rubber crest. They will melt instantly.
💨 If there are wrinkles: Use a vertical steamer at a distance so that the steam relaxes the fabric without touching it. 🧤 The cloth trick: If ironing is essential, place a clean cotton cloth or baking paper over the logo or number. Use the lowest temperature and never use steam. Iron with quick touches, without dragging.
4. 🌬️ Drying and Storage
🛑 Goodbye to the dryer: It's a torture chamber for retro football jerseys. Extreme heat cracks the numbers and causes patches to peel off at the corners. 🌤️ Air dry (but in the shade): Hang the jersey on a hanger or lay it flat. Avoid direct sunlight, as UV rays diminish the intensity of the original colors of 90s jerseys. 👔 On a hanger, better than folded: If you fold the jersey and put weight on it, the numbers can end up sticking together or creating impossible-to-remove creases.
💡 FC VINTAGE Tip: If a number starts to peel off at a corner over the years, don't tear it off. Place baking paper over it and apply dry heat with the iron for 10 seconds to reactivate the glue.
